A passenger lift is intended to carry people. Equipment described as a goods lift is used for goods, but the permitted use of a particular installation must be confirmed from its classification, documentation and instructions. Do not assume people can ride because the platform or cabin is large enough.
The practical question is what your installed equipment is designed and authorised to do, not which informal name staff use for it.
Goods-only and other arrangements
Goods-only equipment and equipment approved to carry passengers have different permitted uses. The name “goods lift” alone does not establish the classification of your installation or whether anyone may travel with a load.
Check the equipment's documents and displayed instructions with the responsible provider. Do not change its use based on a comparison article or another building's equipment.
What is a dumbwaiter?
A dumbwaiter is a small service lift for moving items between levels, commonly in hospitality or other workplaces. It is not a passenger lift. Follow the equipment's loading and operating instructions, and never climb inside it or reach into its travel space.
The size of a load and the way it is carried need to suit the actual equipment. A description such as “food lift” does not establish its capacity or the suitability of every item being transported.
Information for maintenance enquiries
Provide the make and model if known, site location, available records and the intended use. Explain which floors it serves, the normal loading process and any observed faults without entering restricted areas to collect information.
Ask the provider to confirm support for the equipment and the maintenance programme. A passenger-lift agreement should not simply be copied across to a different installation without assessment.
Keep operating responsibilities clear
Make the applicable instructions available to staff and delivery teams. Ask the provider about any uncertainty in signage or equipment information. Report changed behaviour rather than allowing staff to devise workarounds.
Never bypass doors, locks or controls to keep deliveries moving. If equipment is faulty, follow the responsible provider's instructions and organise an alternative business process while the issue is assessed.
Hiteck offers goods lift maintenance in Melbourne and dumbwaiter servicing and repair enquiries. Describe the installation and its use so the team can discuss the appropriate service scope.
