Dropped keys or a phone down a lift shaft: who to call

Keep clear: Do not reach in or enter restricted areas; Record the details: Item, landing and approximate time; Contact the provider: Arrange retrieval and follow directions

If keys, a phone or another item falls through the gap at a lift entrance, contact the building manager or lift service provider. Do not try to recover it yourself. Hiteck offers lift-pit item retrieval, with access and the particular job to be arranged directly.

The place an item appears to have fallen does not establish where it has landed or whether it can be recovered intact. Tell the provider what happened without attempting to look into a shaft or pit.

Information to report

Give the site address, affected lift and floor where the item was dropped. Describe the item and approximate time of the incident. Explain who can arrange building access and provide a callback number.

If you are a resident or visitor, start with the building's agreed contact route. The building manager can identify the current service provider and clarify access and approval arrangements.

Do not attempt a recovery

Do not force landing doors, reach through openings or lower tools, magnets, hooks or cords into equipment spaces. Do not enter a lift pit or shaft. A dropped item does not make those areas safe or authorise access to them.

If the event coincides with a fault or unusual lift behaviour, report that as a separate observation. Follow the provider's instructions about the equipment rather than deciding whether operation can continue from the item's size.

Arrange the job before promising an outcome

Ask the provider about attendance availability, access requirements and the proposed charge. Check who needs to authorise the visit and whether an existing agreement covers any part of it. Responsibility for paying should be confirmed with the building and relevant parties, not assumed from this guide.

Retrieval timing depends on the circumstances and authorised access. Do not treat the value of the item or its urgency to the owner as a guarantee of immediate attendance. Recovery without damage also cannot be promised before the situation is assessed.

Reduce repeat incidents

Keep small loose items secure before entering or leaving the lift. Building managers can share a short reminder and the correct reporting contact. Do not fit makeshift covers, seals or other alterations around a lift entrance to stop items falling; proposed changes need the appropriate assessment.

For an enquiry, use Hiteck's lift-pit retrieval service information or call 03 9293 8100. If someone is trapped, or there is immediate danger or a medical emergency, treat that as an emergency rather than an item-retrieval request; call 000 where required.
