Lift doors not closing: what to report and who to call

Lift doors that repeatedly reopen, fail to close or behave differently need to be reported to the maintenance provider. The visible symptom does not establish the cause. A technician needs to assess the equipment rather than a building occupant attempting adjustments.

If anyone is trapped or in danger, use the emergency communication arrangements and call for urgent assistance. Do not treat an occupied lift incident as a routine website enquiry.

Describe the behaviour clearly

Useful observations include which lift and floor are affected, whether the problem repeats, and what happens before the doors stop or reopen. Note the time, any visible message and whether the lift is occupied. Explain if an incident occurred during furniture deliveries or building works without assuming those activities caused it.

Record only what can be observed from a normal passenger area. Do not obstruct the doors or repeatedly trigger the behaviour to make a recording.

Why online diagnosis is unreliable

Door movement involves several parts of the installation. A similar symptom can relate to different equipment or operating conditions. A passenger's description helps the provider plan an assessment, but it cannot confirm a sensor fault, failed component or safe operating condition.

Ask the attending technician to explain the findings and any further work. If no cause has been confirmed, retain that distinction in the building's records.

What occupants should avoid

Do not force, wedge or dismantle lift doors. Stay clear of moving doors and do not use your body or an object to prevent them closing. Leave assessment and repair to the appropriate authorised people.

Follow the service provider's instructions about the affected equipment. If the lift is unavailable, arrange building communications without suggesting that the doors have been repaired until that is confirmed.

After attendance

Keep the attendance reference, findings, completed work and outstanding recommendations. If the issue returns, link the new report to the earlier one and describe any differences. This creates a clearer history than separate messages saying “doors broken again”.
